With door and window alarms, you can be sure that your home is secure. They also provide a sense of comfort and security, and they’re easy to use and install.

Door and window alarms are one of the best ways to keep intruders from getting in when you’re not home. These alarms use sensors to detect when a door is opened when you’re not home and ring an alarm if the countdown isn’t disarmed within a time window.

But there’s a lot more to it. As we’ll see, depending on the technologies used in your alarm system, there can be many ways for an intruder to bypass the alarm and get in.

We tested some of the highest-rated alarm systems in the market. Here we review the 5 best door and window alarms according to our rigorous testing.

1. GE Wireless Alarm System

General Electric, founded by Thomas Edison in 1892, has consistently been the leading manufacturer of electronic products for more than a century. It would be redundant to say that GE has vast experience in electronics.

The GE Choice Alert Wireless Alarm System is one of the best alarm systems you can find in the market, and for many reasons.

This alarm system is a DIY project. This means that you don’t need any professional help setting up any of the components. The sensors can be activated and set by in a few simple steps.

The sensors come with batteries installed and are ready to go. You just have to pull a strip to activate the batteries and turn the sensors on. You can set up the sensors by pressing a single button on the hub, which GE calls the “Control Center.”

This alarm system uses an original technology by GE called Priority Code Selection Technology. This technology allows you to set up the sensors easily while also ensuring that your sensors don’t interfere with the alarm systems in your neighborhood, even if they have the same model. This technology also keeps intruders from hacking the system.

Another notable reason 0we think the GE Alarm System is ideal for most homes is that it is waterproof, weather-resistant, and can the sensors can operate from up to 150 feet away from the control center. This allows you to set up your alarm system all around the house, including outdoors and in the garage, without running out of range. The control center allows you to set up up to 16 individual sensors in 4 different zones.

GE also has many other products, such as motion sensors (check how motion sensors work) and pin keypads, that allow you to wirelessly customize your home according to your needs without needing professional help.

What We Liked:

  • DIY easy installation
  • Range of sensors and security products to customize
  • Priority code selection technology protects against hacking
  • No monthly subscription fees

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Doesn’t have professional monitoring

2. Samsung Electronics F DW-1 ADT Door and Window Detectors and Alarms

The Samsung ADT Alarm System is a collaboration between the security alarm specialist company ADT and the tech giant Samsung. TL;DR, The Samsung ADT Alarm System is a product that solves the greatest and most common privacy concerns reported by ADT’s experience in the field using Samsung’s state-of-the-art technological solutions.

One of the vulnerabilities many alarm systems have is that their data can be read via a simple RF reading device. The sensors transmit data using radiofrequency waves. The remote uses the same RF waves to transmit signals.

When you press the “Disarm” button on the remote, it sends a certain signal in a radio frequency range that lets the central hub know that you’re home. It thus disarms the alarms accordingly.

The vulnerability is that an intruder can record this signal when you disarm the alarm and replay the same signal to disarm your alarm later. This can be done by common commercially available devices such as HackRF.

HackRF can record signals sent from your remote when you’re home and replay those signals later. This would allow a hacker to make your alarm system think that you’re home when you actually aren’t. Security professionals call this a “Replay Attack,” and it’s one of the easiest hacking attacks as it doesn’t even require any programming.

The Samsung ADT Alarm System fixes this by using 2-way encryption. This means that the signals your remote sends are never the same, and the central hub expects a different signal every time. This means that even if someone recorded the signal, it would be no good as they still wouldn’t be able to bypass the system.

The Samsung ADT Alarm System is a wireless DIY product that doesn’t require any professional help during installation. This alarm system also has a range of sensors to choose from that allow you to customize your home according to your needs.

The Samsung Electronics F DW-1 ADT Alarm System is a professionally monitored security system. This means that it provides a level of reliable security that no off-the-grid system can. But, this also means that you have to pay some monthly fees for these extra services. But the fees are pretty low compared to competitors, and there are no long-term contracts.

What We Liked:

  • DIY easy installation
  • Range of sensors and security products to customize
  • Dual encryption protects against hacking and replay attacks
  • Has professional monitoring

3. Lifeshield Door And Window Sensor

LifeShield is the sister company of ADT and specializes in smart home security systems. This product is an 18 piece set that includes:

  • A Hub
  • 6 Door and Window Sensors
  • 2 Motion Sensors
  • A Smart Camera
  • A Keypad
  • A smoke detector
  • A Glass break sensor
  • 2 temperature sensors
  • A Remote
  • A Yard Sign and 4 Window Stickers

This is by far the most thorough security system we could find. Many people don’t realize the vulnerabilities they leave in their homes. This product is perfect for people who don’t have many smart security products installed around the house. The hub is also compatible with Amazon Alexa.

The 6 door and window sensors ensure that no one can enter your door when you’re out by opening a window or door. But motion sensors still leave one option; an intruder can break a window or a sliding glass door to enter the house.

But, this product includes a glass break sensor that, when attached to a glass, can monitor the shock waves of breaking glass and ring the alarm.

The product also includes two motion sensors that ring the alarm if motion is detected in the house, even in the dark. The smart camera starts shooting footage as soon as one of the other sensors detects something. You can view the footage live and call the police if something is wrong.

The keypad allows you to disarm the alarm system from outside the house if you forget the remote inside the house.

One minor problem with most door and window sensors is that they work using magnets. Door and window sensors consist of two pieces. One piece has all the electronic components that allow it to communicate with the central hub. The other piece is nothing but a magnet. As long as there is a strong magnetic field passing through the sensor, it thinks the door or the window is closed. (1)

This means that if an intruder knows where on your window or your door you have placed your sensors, they can use a strong magnet to supply a magnetic field to the sensor from outside. This can be done easily using strong neodymium magnets available on Amazon for ten bucks. We were able to bypass most door sensors from outside using a cylinder of five neodymium magnets.

This is not a major issue since this method of hacking a sensor requires the intruder to know the exact location of the sensor in advance. They can’t guess either because opening the door when the magnet is in the wrong place will trip the sensor and trigger the alarm. Nonetheless, this method is extremely fast and easy, and if an intruder somehow knows where the sensors are, they can easily get in and get out without tripping any sensors.

ADT is probably aware of this issue, which is why the Lifeshield Door And Window Sensor has a particularly passive sensor that cannot be activated from a distance. This was the only sensor that we weren’t able to bypass using magnets from the outside.

The Lifeshield Door And Window Sensor do not charge any monthly fees, but you have the option to subscribe to a monthly package to get professional monitoring.

What We Liked:

  • DIY easy installation
  • Complete and thorough security system with a range of products
  • Sensitive door and window sensors
  • Optional professional monitoring service

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Requires different power sockets for the Hub, the Keypad, and the Tablet

Ring Alarm Contact Sensor 2-pack (1st Gen)

4. Ring Alarm Contact Sensor

Ring is one of the most popular and acclaimed smart home security brands in the US. This Amazon sister company has been the leading developer in the smart home industry with their innovating products spanning every aspect of smart home security.

It goes without saying that the Ring Alarm Contact Sensor is compatible with Ring Alarm and Amazon Alexa. You can easily arm your home using your voice.

The Ring Alarm Contact Sensor is compatible with iOS as well as android devices and doesn’t require any professional help or any tools while setting it up. The sensors come with 3V Lithium batteries.

The feature we particularly love about the Ring Alarm Contact Sensor is its two-way radio. One vulnerability most door and window sensors have is jamming. When a sensor is triggered, it sends a signal to the hub via radiofrequency. The central hub starts the countdown and rings the alarm. But, if the signal isn’t able to reach the hub, tripping the sensor won’t do anything.

Hackers can use a simple RF jamming device to do this. A jamming device emits high-intensity radio frequencies in the same range as the signal. This high-intensity signal is a messy random noise and randomizes any signal emitted by any other device. The central hub isn’t able to make out the distress call sent by the sensor, and hence, the alarm doesn’t go off even when the sensors are triggered.

The two-way radio is a way to counter this and detect jamming. This technology works similarly to noise-cancelling headphones and uses emitters and receivers planted on both the hub and the sensors.

We were able to jam most sensors using a $40 RF jammer from Amazon. But the Ring Alarm Contact Sensor was able to transmit the signal even when being jammed.

Some users have reported that the batteries were low out of the box. But most reviews about the battery are positive, and that was probably a problem with one batch.

Note that these sensors do not work with Ring Gen 1 products. If you have a Gen 1 Ring Alarm hub, you’ll need to upgrade before you can use these sensors.

What We Liked:

  • DIY easy installation
  • Compatible with Ring Gen 2 products
  • Compatible with Amazon Alexa
  • Two-way radio anti-jamming system

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Requires a Ring Alarm Hub
  • Not compatible with Ring Gen 1 products

5. GE Deluxe Wireless Door Sensor

The GE Deluxe Wireless Door Sensor is truly one of a kind. The sensor is primarily only meant for doors and the sensor and all the components of a hub inside it. This solves many of the vulnerabilities that door sensors have.

The sensor has an alarm system built into it. It has a four-digit keypad for a custom pin, and you can set it to “Home” mode or “Away” mode right from the sensor. The sensor also has a 120-decibel alarm, which is louder than a turbo aircraft at take-off. Any intruder who succeeds in opening the door will immediately have to run away.

There is one vulnerability with more keypad home security systems. A hacker can get into the security system and start entering pins starting from 1111 to 4444. Manually, this would be a time-consuming task, but a computer can transmit these 3334 different codes in 10 minutes. This is an extremely common method of getting past passwords called the “Brute Force” method. This is the first method most hackers learn.

Another vulnerability is with keypads that don’t internally process the code and send the code to the central hub for processing. When you enter a code, the code is transmitted to the hub using RF. But wireless signals aren’t private; anyone with an RF reader can read your password and enter it later.

Another vulnerability is jamming. Hackers can overwhelm the RF frequency range and keep the central hub from detecting the signals sent by the sensor.

The GE Deluxe Wireless Door Sensor solves all these problems at once by being completely radio silent. This sensor doesn’t have a single radio detector or emitter installed. This means that the only way to access the system is via its physical buttons. Since the entire alarm system is inside the sensor, there’s no need to transmit anything anywhere.

It’s impossible to hack this sensor from outside via jamming, replaying, or brute-forcing. Once the sensor is tripped, you have limited time to enter the pin. No one can “brute force” the pin from inside either because they’d barely have the time to try 3 pins, let alone 3334 pins.

The downside of not having radio detectors and transmitters is that this device doesn’t have a remote. You can only access it via the button on the device.

What We Liked:

  • DIY easy installation
  • Entire alarm system built into the sensor
  • 120 dB alarm
  • Completely radio silent, impossible to hack from outside

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Doesn’t have a remote
