Having a quality lock can be a very good investment. Most locks are not meant for extended exposure to harsh weather and deteriorate over time. This makes these locks easy to break, leaving your valuables vulnerable. High-quality locks, on the other hand, are designed to be weatherproof.

Most thieves don’t want to spend excessive time picking a difficult lock. Hence, having a quality, pickproof lock on your storage unit can act as a successful deterrent.

There are hundreds of storage lock models out there in the market. Here we have selected 5 of the best locks that we think are the best for a storage unit.

1. SCHLAGE 994831 Lock

Schlage is one of the most popular manufacturers in the US. Their locks are strongly built and offer a good amount of resistance against lock pinking and forced entry. And the SCHLAGE 994831 Lock is no different.

The SCHLAGE 994831 Lock is built with a hardened solid steel 63.5 mm body. This means that the lock cannot be broken by hitting it. It also has a 2-1/2 inch molybdenum shackle. A strong shackle ensures that an intruder can’t get past the lock by cutting the shackle using a saw.

The lock also has a brass cylinder with 6 pins. A strong cylinder and a higher number of pins keep the lock safe from bumping. Bumping is a common lock picking technique that involves breaking the pins using force.

The pins also have what’s called false sets. False sets make a lock picker think they’re progressing with the picking by setting pins while the pins are being set in false positions. They only realize the pins are in a false position after they have set each pin. The only way forward is to try to pick the lock all the way from the beginning and set each pin again, hoping no pin gets falsely set. The process takes so much time that most burglars will just give up.

False sets combined with 6 pins make the SCHLAGE 994831 Lock extremely pick resistant.

The shackle locks are in place via two deadbolts which further protects the locks from being forcefully opened. The lock is rated for moderate to high crime rate areas.

Features:

  • Material: Alloy Steel, Brass
  • Finish Type: Polished
  • Item Dimensions: 7.75 x 2 x 6.5 in
  • Lock Type: Key Lock

Master Lock 141DLF Covered Aluminum Padlock with Key, Black

2. Master Lock 141DL

The Master Lock 141DL is designed to withstand being constantly exposed to the elements while also providing reliable, consistent security.

The lock body is made of aluminium and covered with black vinyl. This makes them resistant to corrosion. The shackle is made of hardened steel, making the lock cut resistant. The lock uses a four-pin mechanism with false sets, making it hard to pick even for an expert lock picker.

The aluminum body protects the lock from physical assault. Aluminum also has a really high heat capacity. This makes the lock quite resistant to fire.

Some intruders use a torch to try to melt the internal parts of the lock or to make the lock easier to break by making the metal hot. The high heat capacity of aluminum ensures that the lock is able to absorb a lot of heat before it raises its temperature.

Features:

  • Material: Aluminum, Alloy Steel
  • Finish Type: Polished
  • Item Dimensions: 5.6 x 3.5 x 0.8 in
  • Extra Resistance

3. Commando Lock Heavy Duty Riveted Steel Padlock

As the name suggests, the Commando Lock Heavy Duty Riveted Steel Padlock is extremely tough and built to last. This military-grade lock is not only resistant against all kinds of physical assaults but also offers significant pick resistance.

The famous lock picker on YouTube LockpickingLawer called the Commando Lock Heavy Duty Riveted Steel Padlock “deceptively cheap-looking” since the lock is much stronger than and resistive than its size and simple design would suggest. These locks are actually used in the US military.

The lock is made of crop carbon steel. A higher percentage of carbon in the alloy gives it higher tensile strength, which goes perfectly with the design of this lock. The lock is also coated with zinc to increase corrosion resistance.

The Commando Lock Heavy Duty Riveted Steel Padlock has a steel alloy shackle that is 50% harder to cut than even hardened steel.

For pick resistance, the lock has a 5 pin cylinder with 10 extra pins. Overall, the Commando Lock is extremely durable and difficult to get past if you don’t have a key. The lock exceeds ASTM F883-09’s bump resistance, which makes it one of the most secure commercially available locks in the market.

Features:

  • Material: Metal
  • Shape: Square
  • Item Dimensions: 8.03 x 3.98 x 1.34 in
  • Weight: ‎12.5 ounces

4. Puroma Combination Lock

Combination locks are also more convenient since you don’t have to have a key. Combination locks can’t be picked using the same tools as a keyed lock can. But depending on the model, they may be possible to pick without using any tools. The method involved searching for what’s called “gates”.

The Puroma Combination Lock has a way around this. Inspired by the false pin design, the lock uses what are called false gates. These false gates are quite hard to distinguish from real gates, making it fruitless to try to pick the lock.

The lock offers a 4-digit combination. This makes the lock much safer than 3-digit combination locks. A 3 digit combination lock can be unlocked simply by trying every combination from 000 to 999. The process wouldn’t make any noise, and such a lock can be unlocked within minutes, possibly even more quickly. But a 4 digit combination lock has 10,000 different combinations. No one in their right mind would attempt to use all the combinations on a 4-digit lock.

The lock has a zinc alloy body, making it secure against physical assault as well.

Features:

  • Material: Alloy Steel, Zinc
  • Finish Type: Polished
  • Item Dimensions: 3.15 x 1.73 x 0.8 in
  • Waterproof Padlock

5. BRINKS 173-80051 Stainless Steel Resettable Combination Discus Padlock

The BRINKS Combination Padlock is one of the strongest combination locks out there. The lock is made of stainless steel making the lock resistant against the elements while also making it difficult to cut through.

The lock is shaped in a way that makes it resistant to drilling. The black vinyl cover also protects the lock from being drilled into. This is a useful feature since a lot of the hardest to pick locks can be unlocked by drilling, and the method of drilling is particularly more applicable for storage units.

The design minimizes shackle exposure, making it impossible to break the deadbolt.

This all-rounder is a really good choice for a storage locker if its smaller shackle ring can fit your needs.

Features:

  • Material: Stainless Steel
  • Finish Type: Polished
  • Item Dimensions: 6 x 3 x 10 in
  • Lock Type: Combination Lock

Qualities of a Good Storage Lock

When you are choosing a lock for your storage unit, you should remember that only a good lock will provide you with the security you want. If you choose a low-quality lock, you might save money, but you will have no guarantee of getting proper protection. Even when you are buying an expensive lock, you have to consider certain factors to ensure that your lock can endure break-in attempts to a certain degree without failing. Here are the qualities that you should look for in a lock before making a purchase. (1)

False Set

opening keys

One of the primary concerns with key-based locks is that they can be picked. Expert lock pickers can pick a simple keyed lock in seconds. But, lock makers are aware of the tools and techniques lock pickers use. Most locks have some mechanisms that make them pick-resistant. Lock manufacturers rarely ever market their locks As being pick-resistant. So you won’t find “pick resistant” written in the product description of many locks even though they are.

The false set is a pick-resistant mechanism that makes locks quite difficult to pick, even for expert lock pickers. When someone attempts to pick a lock that has false sets, the pins on the lockset set themselves such that the lock picker thinks they’re progressing towards picking the lock but only realize after setting all the pins that some of the pins went into a false set. Pins in the false set appear to be in the right position, but they aren’t. This makes locks with false sets much harder to pick for beginners and intermediate-level lock pickers. Experts may be able to tell false sets from real sets, but false sets make it time-consuming to pick the lock even for them. Most lock pickers won’t even try after failing the first time since the time they would need in order to successfully pick the lock would greatly increase the chances of them getting caught.

Good Material

One of the things to look for in a lock is its material. Before looking for a lock, you should consider your storage space. The best option is to purchase a lock that has an all-metal body. The material should also be weather resistant so it can stand extreme weather conditions and doesn’t corrode or rust.

Shackle Size

The shackle size of your lock should depend upon the latch or the chasp of your storage unit’s door. The shackle of the lock should ideally just be thick enough to barely pass through the latch and fit there. The thicker the size of the shackle is, the harder it is for any intruder to cut it and enter your storage unit.

Multiple Pins

The locking mechanism of a lock revolves around a combination and a series of pins. The lock that you choose should have at least five pins so that it would be harder to pick. The more pins your lock has, the more time it would take an intruder to pick the lock.

General Security Measures

If you choose a keyed lock, make sure it has some pick resistance. Keyed locks are usually stronger than other types of locks. They minimize the risk of security breaches from physical attacks. (2)

Combination locks may be harder to unlock for some lock pickers since they’re less common. However, combination locks should also have anti-pick mechanisms such as false gates to be reliable.

Wrapping Up

With technology advancing, thieves are also coming up with updated methods to get through a lock and enter a storage unit. Therefore, it’s important to update your storage unit locks once in a while. This way, you can ensure maximum protection for your valuables.

Whenever you are changing your lock, remember to buy a lock made of durable materials, With multiple pins, and a thick shackle. Don’t shy away from investing more money for a better lock, as a better lock would only save you money in the long run.
