Modern wireless smart home devices have made it possible to manage our homes in ways few of us could fathom the possibility of a decade ago. A smart water shutoff valve is one such wonderful device.

Smart water shutoff valves can detect everything from major leaks to leaks that lose just one drop per minute. In the case of a major leak, smart water shut-off valves automatically shut the water off at the main and notify you of the leak.

But, there’s a lot more smart water shut off valves can do. We selected some of the highest-rated smart shut off valves and tested each product for a week. Here we discuss our findings of the 5 best smart water shutoff valves in the market.

1. Moen Flo Smart Water Shutoff Valve

There is no universe where the Moen Flo Smart Water Shutoff Valve isn’t placed at the top of this list. This smart shut off valve is the most “smart” shut off value you will find.

The Moen Flo Smart Water Shutoff Valve consistently measures flow rate and other parameters of water to ensure there are no leaks. In case of a major leak, the valve automatically shuts water at the main, protecting the water from damaging the house.

The Moen Flo Smart Water Shutoff Valve has three basic sensors: a turbine, a pressure sensor, and a temperature sensor.

The turbine measures the flow rate of water. This allows the valve to collect data on how much water you use and to detect major leaks.

The pressure sensor detects small leaks that don’t produce a large enough flow to turn the turbine. It does this by measuring the drop in pressure due to leaking water when all the faucets are off. This sensor also lets you know when water is leaking from a faucet that isn’t closed properly.

The temperature sensor measures the temperature of the water. This sensor notifies you when the temperature is reaching dangerously low levels. At low temperatures, water tries to expand in volume, and the immense pressure results in burst pipes.

Moen plans to integrate the Moen Flo Smart Water Shutoff Valve with smart thermostats to automatically regulate temperature and protect the house from pipe bursts.

Temperature and pressure have a complex relationship with water. When cooling down, water contracts, but when going from 4 oC to 0 oC, water expands. This can result in changes in pressure even when there’s no leak. But, Moen has taken this into account, and in our experience, the Moen Flo Smart Water Shutoff Valve does not give any false alarms.

To our surprise, the Moen Flo Smart Water Shutoff Valve uses machine learning algorithms on the data it collects about water usage to give you data analytics and perfect its detection abilities.

We used this smart valve for a week, and by the end of the week, it had collected enough data to tell us how much water was used by different appliances.

One of the things we love about the Moen Flo Smart Water Shutoff Valve is that it does not require you to place sensors all around the house. The valve uses machine learning and pressure sensing to detect leaks anywhere in the house.

The Flo Shutoff Valve also has a really well-made app, which is rarely the case for most smart home products. The app allows you to monitor the flow, the pressure, and the temperature of water live. It also helps you set water conservation goals.

As this is a smart valve, it is compatible with Amazon Alexa, IFTTT, and Google Assistant and does not need a smart hub. The Moen Flo Smart Water Shutoff Valve connects to your phone via WiFi and receives power via an AC/DC connection.

Phyn Plus Smart Water Assistant + Shutoff: Professionally-Installed Smart...

2. Phyn Plus Smart Water Assistant and Shutoff

What makes Phyn Plus Smart Water Shutoff so impressive is its deep learning algorithm. Deep learning in a water shut off valve? Allow us to explain.

Different appliances such as the toilets and faucets around your house have different turbulences. That is, when water hits different surfaces in the pipeline and in different appliances, different echoes are produced. These echoes are pressure waves in the water; the same way sound is just pressure waves in the air.

The Phyn Plus Shutoff Valve has a pressure sensor that measures the pressure of water 240 times a second and saves that data for analysis. This data is, of course, pressure waves from different appliances. The Phyn Plus Shutoff Valve then finds patterns in the data and assigns a “fingerprint” to each appliance. This allows the smart valve to know, just by looking at the pressure valve, whether water is flowing through the kitchen faucet, the shower, the bathtub faucet, or an unknown source such as a leak.

The same way we can recognize a sound even when there’s a lot of noise, the valve can detect multiple drain sources at once, keeping perfect track of how much water is flowing through each appliance. Not only this, but the Phyn Plus Shutoff Valve gets better the more data it collects. The smart valve gets more accurate at “fingerprinting” different appliances the longer it’s used.

This means that while other products may give a false alarm of a leak when you turn on a faucet, or think of a leak like a faucet, or take several minutes to recognize a leak, the Phyn Plus Shutoff Valve can instantly tell an unknown source of drainage such as a leak from known sources of drainage such as a faucet.

The Phyn Plus Shutoff Valve also has a temperature sensor that protects against pipe bursts when it’s cold. The valve is also compatible with Amazon Alexa, and you can control it or access information directly via Alexa. You can command Alexa to shut the main valve off, or you can ask how much water you have used on a particular day. You can ever ask what appliances are turned on at the moment.

However, this is an integrated valve; it requires professional installation and cannot be placed on your existing valve.

Features:

  • Type: Integrated Valve
  • Smart Home compatibility: Yes
  • Water Flow Sensor Turbine: Yes
  • Pressure Sensor: Yes
  • Thermometer: Yes
  • Remote Leak Sensors: No
  • The Phyn Plus Shutoff Valve is a treat for smart home enthusiasts. In fact, we take back what we said before; in some universes, this product would be at the top of this list.

  • Uses deep learning to recognize different appliances
  • Gets smarter with time
  • Has a temperature detector
  • Smart home compatible
  • Has an app that shows analytics and gives you remote control

3. Dome Home Automation Water Shut-Off Valve

The previous product was an integrated valve; it was a valve itself. This smart shutoff valve, on the other hand, is a valve controller. It sits on an existing ball valve, and the motor controls the valve.

The primary advantage of this system is that you can install the Dome Home Automation Water Shut-Off Valve yourself. It’s a DIY product and does not require any professional tools or any plumbing experience to install.

The Dome Home Automation Water Shut-Off Valve is compatible with the most common smart home hubs, including Samsung SmartThings, Wink, Nexia, and Home Seer. The smart valve is compatible with Z-wave, and you can turn the main off from anywhere via your phone.

The Dome Home Automation Water Shut-Off Valve also has an auto-shutoff feature, and it turns the main off automatically when your smart home devices detect a leak. The wall also sends you a notification in such an event.

But leak detection is where this smart valve falls short. Since the Dome water shutoff is just a controller and never gets in contact with water, it cannot detect any leaks by itself.

But Dome has a solution. Dome also produces remote leak sensors that can be placed around the house where a leak is most likely. The sensors are wireless and have a built-in alarm: something uncommon in integrated valves. The Dome Leak Sensors are also, of course, waterproof and have their own app.

The Dome Home Automation Water Shut-Off Valve is perfect for you if you want a budget-friendly remote control automated valve that is easy to install. You will be giving up some of the features of integrated valves such as leak and temperature detection unless you also buy the Dome leak sensors.

Features:

  • Type: Valve Controller
  • Smart Home Compatibility: Yes
  • Water Flow Sensor Turbine: No
  • Pressure Sensor: No
  • Thermometer: No
  • Remote Leak Sensors: Yes (not included)

4. EcoNet Controls EVC200-HCSML The Bulldog Valve Robot

If this list was only for valve controllers, this product would be our top pick. The EcoNet Bulldog Valve Robot may not be the fanciest smart valve out there, but it delivers what it promises. This smart valve controller sits on top of your existing valve and uses an extremely high power motor and high effort gear system to turn the toughest to turn valves. The EcoNet Bulldog Valve Robot takes only about 18 seconds to open and close a valve, which is quite fast for a valve controller.

Another feature that separates the EcoNet Bulldog Valve Robot from the previous entry is that it sits on the valve body and not the pipe. Mounting a valve controller on the pipe can cause stress on the joints.

The EcoNet Bulldog Valve Robot does not have any sensors, so it doesn’t detect water leaks itself. But, it’s compatible with most smart home devices such as Samsung SmartThings,  Hubitat, Wink Nexia, Universal Devices, Control4, and Honeywell, and thus, you can pair it with other leak detection devices to shut the valve off automatically.

The EcoNet Bulldog Valve Robot is a DIY product and does not require more than a Phillips screwdriver for installation.

Features:

  • Type: Valve Controller
  • Smart Home Compatibility: Yes
  • Water Flow Sensor Turbine: No
  • Pressure Sensor: No
  • Thermometer: No
  • Remote Leak Sensors: No

5. LeakSmart Water Leak Detection Starter Kit

One thing many waters shut off valves overlook is that water can could also leak in appliances. For example, you may forget to turn off the sink faucet or the bathtub faucet when the drain stopper is still in place. This would result in water spilling all over the house, but a pressure-based leak detection system would have no way of knowing.

This is where the LeakSmart Water Leak Detection Kit comes in. This kit includes an integrated valve, one water leak sensor, and a LeakSmart Hub. The integrated valve replaces your existing valve with an electronic wireless one which is controlled by the central hub. The leaks are detected via the leak detector unit, which can be placed anywhere in the house.

The leak detector unit detects water when it comes into contact with the detector. This means that it’ll detect spilling no matter the source. The LeakSmart Water Leak Detection Kit will detect spilling water and turn off the main regardless of the water coming from a leak of an opened faucet.

But, the LeakSmart can only detect water where the sensors are placed. So you’ll need to place one sensor in the kitchen, one in all the bathrooms, and several other detectors in different places where you think water can leak from. Since the kit only includes one sensor, you’ll have to buy the others yourself. The hub can handle up to 32 different sensors.

This is the most reliable system since it measures spilling water directly instead of measuring leaks via indirect indicators such as changes in pressure.

Being an integrated valve, the LeakSmart Water Leak Detection Kit can turn than main off within 5 seconds of leak detection. The valve is compatible with most smart home devices such as Wink, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings.

One of the standout features of the LeakSmart Water Leak Detection Kit is that it can run without WiFi or power. The valve has a backup battery that can turn the main valve on and off remotely via your phone, even when there’s no WiFi or power.

Features:

  • Type: Integrated Valve
  • Smart Home Compatibility: Yes
  • Water Flow Sensor Turbine: No
  • Pressure Sensor: No
  • Thermometer: No
  • Remote Leak Sensors: Yes

What We Liked:

  • Detects spilt water from all sources
  • Backup battery
  • Hub can handle up to 32 sensors

What We Didn’t Like:

  • The starter kit only comes with one detector

Value Editorial and Buying Debates

Why do some smart valves have a pressure sensor?

The pressure sensor is really interesting. This sensor allows the smart water shutoff valves to detect leaks with a flow of just one drop per minute. Such a small leak over time can corrode the floor and cost you a lot more than it would cost to fix the leak. The pressure sensor does this by, well, measuring the pressure. (1)

When all the faucets are off, and there is no water flowing, the pressure of water should be constant. But, if there is a small leak somewhere, and even if that leak only produces one drop every minute, it will result in a measurable drop in pressure in the span of an hour or so. This drop in pressure is interpreted by smart valves as a leak, and the valve notifies you of its findings immediately.

What does a thermometer do in a smart valve?

One of the most common causes of burst pipes is a phenomenon called the anomalous expansion of water. When the water reaches its freezing point, it expands in volume. This is unlike most other liquids that contract in volume as they cool down. This expansion of water results in extremely high pressure, and since the freezing water has nowhere to go, it bursts the pipes and escapes. (2)

What are the different types of smart water shut-off valves?

There are two basic types of smart water shutoff valves.

The first type is called “Valve controller.” A valve controller sits on top of an existing valve and controls the valve via a motor. A valve controller cannot measure the flow rate, pressure, or temperature of the water as it doesn’t get in direct contact with water. Valve controllers can use separate sensors placed around the house to detect leaks and shut the valve off automatically.

The second type, called “Integrated Valve,” is a smart valve that replaces your existing valve. The valve is part of the smart shutoff valve, and water passes through the smart valve. There are different sensors placed in integrated valves that detect different parameters. Integrated valves can detect any leak anywhere in the house. When an integrated valve detects a minor leak, it sends you a notification so you can check if a faucet isn’t completely turned off or if there’s a leak somewhere around the house. When an integrated valve detects a major leak, it automatically turns off the main, keeping your house safe from water damage.

Wrapping Up

You may prefer some of these products more than others depending on your intentions, but you can count on one thing: all the products included here are the best in their subcategory. If you want a deep analysis of your water usage, you should choose the first or the second option on the list. If you don’t care for any of the fancy stuff and just want a simple remote control valve, you should choose from the third and the fourth option. The fifth option is unique in that it focuses only on spillage and does the best with it among all others.
